The ideal length for most grasses is two to three inches long even a little longer during the summer months is ok. Weeds will be less likely to growin grass at this length also.  Grass is the most healthy at this length. The grass can be allowed to grow as long as 5 inches before it is cut if you wish. When you do mow your lawn make sure not to cut off more then a third of the length at any given point in time. If your grass has gotten too long consider doing two cuts on the grass to get it to the desired length.

You certainly can add fertilizers and additives to your yard to help your lawn health.  Make sure to do a soil test before you add anything to yoru yard. You need to know what needs to be added to your soil before you decide to add a fertilizer on a whim. For example you may need to add a large amount of nitrogen but no phosphorus. It is a waste of fertilizer and a waste of money to add something to your soil it doesn’t need. Grass clippings should be allowed to be mulch in the yard.  This helps to return nutrients back into the soil.

If you have clay or heavy soil, you may have to aerate the soil to get the best lawn. This helps to loosen the soil to promote root growth and ultimately have healthier grass.  You can get aerators that go on your B000BX1GMC, that go on the B000WWO2QE, or B0007CWJZK models. Some people also roll their yards with weights to increase grass growth. People with clay soils should probably not do this because of already compressed soil.
